Two-thirds of respondents choose stone laminate wall in Belfast Yard sound attenuation wall survey
June 29, 2017 — City and RTG staff met with the community to discuss options for noise attenuation walls for the community. There has been ongoing discussion with residents over the past months about the expanded activities at the Belfast Yard.

These options included seeking the level of community interest on the potential for a wall to be constructed north of the VIA tracks adjacent to the back yards of residents on Avenue P (“North wall”), as well as three options for the wall around the expanded Belfast Yard.

Read a summary report of the feedback from the community.

With respect to the North wall, approximately two thirds of respondents indicated that they did not want to pursue any new structure on the north side of the VIA corridor along the residential property line. While there were several reasons for this, the fact that the wall would likely be constructed close to the property line was a clear disincentive given the impact on the existing vegetation adjacent to the backyard of many homes, as was the general lack of support for two walls between the community and the Belfast Yard.

The City will also not pursue the addition of a north sound wall at this time. Instead, we will re-engage with residents in the spring of 2019, after the Confederation Line has been in operation for the better part of a year to determine if residents would like to reconsider this option.

Regarding the Belfast Yard wall, residents provided a clear indication that stone laminate was their preference for the finish of this structure. Recognizing this, the City has advised RTG of this preference so that the order can be placed for this material.

Note that while the material has now been determined, the exact location of the noise wall remains outstanding at this time. RTG is still determining if there is any opportunity to shift a section of the wall south of the property line such that outside of this section can be landscaped and maintained. This should be determined in the coming weeks, and we will advise the community through the regular bi-weekly construction updates –also attached to this email. In the meantime, wall construction continues to be scheduled for later this summer, and we will keep you updated on construction progress through those same bi-weekly construction updates.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on the wall options, and of course, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.
